Bosch Series 6 Freestanding Dishwasher SMS6HCI02A

9.1/10
Bosch SMS6HCI02A brushed-steel Series 6 freestanding dishwasher

Bosch SMS6HCI02A shown.

Worth Buying score9.1 / 10Research-based editorial score
Evidence statusExtensive, with a material conflictLarge positive syndicated pools + smaller mixed independent sample · checked 18 Sep 2026
VerdictThe strongest all-round conventional dishwasher here: current, quiet, water-efficient and sensibly priced around $1,300, with unusually mature exact-model evidence that remains positive overall despite a real independent warning.

The 845 × 600 × 600mm SMS6HCI02A holds 15 place settings and uses Rackmatic to adjust the upper basket around taller plates, bowls and glassware. DosageAssist helps dissolve detergent predictably, while AquaSensor adjusts water use according to the load. The layout is flexible, but owner complaints confirm that no rack arrangement suits every crockery collection.

Its 44dB rating is appropriate for many open-plan homes, although the LG is quieter on paper. Water use is an efficient 11 litres per cycle with a 5.5-star WELS rating, while energy efficiency is rated at four stars. EcoSilence Drive supports the quiet positioning, AquaStop adds leak protection and Home Connect provides remote status and controls. Wi-Fi is convenient, not a reason by itself to choose a dishwasher.

Drying uses a heat exchanger rather than an auto-opening door. ExtraDry can improve the result, but plastics may still emerge damp and the option can add time or energy demand. Buyers who prioritise automatic door opening should compare the Beko and LG.

Bosch's standard whole-product warranty is two years. A temporary promotion during reassessment extended eligible Series 6 and Series 8 machines to a total of five years after registration; buyers should confirm that promotion and its conditions remain active rather than assuming five years is permanent.

Practical adjustable loadingRackmatic helps accommodate tall plates, bowls and glassware across the main baskets.
Efficient full-size platform15 place settings, 11L water use, 5.5-star WELS and four-star energy.
ExtraDryA selectable boost for loads that need more drying than the standard cycle provides.
AquaStop + Home ConnectLeak protection matters more than the optional connected controls.

Extensive exact-model evidence, with a material source conflict

Bosch Australia · about 4.8/5 from 700+ reviewsA very large Bosch-hosted or syndicated exact-model pool with strongly positive overall sentiment.
Appliances Online · about 4.8/5 from 660+ reviews; The Good Guys · about 4.7/5 from 288Large exact-model retailer pools, but syndication and overlap mean these counts must not be added together.
ProductReview Australia · about 3.2/5 from 15 reviewsA smaller, materially more mixed independent sample covering rack fit, drying, perceived build quality, cleaning and service frustrations, alongside positive owners.
CHOICE 2026 brand analysis · Bosch ranked second behind MieleUseful brand-level confidence, not an exact-model test result for SMS6HCI02A.

These pools are not averaged. The depth of positive exact-model evidence supports the recommendation; the smaller independent sample still provides a meaningful warning about fit, drying and after-sales experiences.

Pros

  • Current pricing around $1,300
  • Quiet 44dB operation
  • Strong water and energy efficiency
  • Extensive exact-model owner evidence
  • Rackmatic, AquaStop and useful wash controls

Cons

  • Plastics may remain damp without ExtraDry
  • Rack layout does not suit every household
  • Independent sample includes service and build complaints
  • Standard whole-product warranty is two years
  • Wi-Fi does not improve core dishwashing

Evidence statusLarge positive pool + small negative sampleSources and range provenance shown separately · checked 18 Sep 2026
VerdictThe clearest price-to-capability proposition in the shortlist: 16-place capacity, auto-open drying and useful wash features around $800–$900, but no longer a caveat-free bargain once the independent evidence is included.

The BDFB1630X fits 16 place settings and gives cutlery a full-width third tray, freeing the lower basket for plates and cookware. Its upper basket has three loaded adjustment positions, while four folding lower supports make room for awkward pots. Rack and cabinet feel may not be as refined as the Bosch, but the layout is highly practical for the price.

SelfDry automatically opens the door at the end of the cycle to release humid air. That can materially improve drying, especially for plastics, though the door's path, surrounding cabinetry and Beko's installation guidance need to be respected. AquaIntense targets a high-pressure cleaning zone, Hygiene Intense raises cleaning intensity, and Quick & Shine offers a 58-minute daily program.

At 43dBA it is slightly quieter on paper than the Bosch. Water use is higher at 13 litres per cycle, although it still holds a 5-star WELS rating and 4-star energy rating. Public CHOICE data lists a two-year warranty, extending to five years when registered under the stated terms; buyers should confirm the current registration conditions.

Extensive positive syndicated evidence, with a small negative independent range sample

Appliances Online · about 4.4/5 from 307 BDFB1630X reviewsA large retailer pool with positive themes around cleaning, quiet operation, loading space, SelfDry and value.
Andoo · 400+ strongly positive BDFB1630 family reviewsA broader colour-syndicated family pool. Many reviews originate from Beko ANZ or alternate colour variants, so it is not presented as an independently collected X-only Australian sample.
ProductReview BDFB1630 range · about 2.8/5 from 9 reviewsA small independent range sample spanning verified BDFB1630X, BDFB1630W and BDFB1630B MPNs, with complaints about drying, layout, construction, cleaning consistency, controls and isolated faults.
CHOICE · exact BDFB1630X testedPublic specifications support the capacity, efficiency, water-use and warranty context; member-only scores are not reproduced.

These pools are not averaged. The larger evidence base supports the value case, while the independent sample makes drying, rack fit and build concerns material buying considerations.

Pros

  • Excellent value around $800–$900
  • Large 16-place layout
  • SelfDry auto-open drying
  • Large positive retailer and brand-syndicated pool
  • Useful quick, hygiene and targeted-cleaning modes

Cons

  • Small independent sample is materially negative
  • Drying remains a recurring complaint
  • Rack and build feel may be less refined
  • Higher 13L water use than Bosch and LG
  • Auto-open does not solve every drying issue
Buy it ifYou want maximum practical capacity, auto-open drying and strong features without paying premium-brand prices.
Skip it ifYou are sensitive to rack feel, want the lowest water use or place greater weight on the small negative independent sample than the large syndicated owner pool.

LG 15 Place QuadWash TrueSteam Dishwasher XD2A25MB

8.7/10
LG XD2A25MB matte-black 15-place QuadWash TrueSteam freestanding dishwasher

LG XD2A25MB shown.

Worth Buying score8.7 / 10Research-based editorial score
Evidence statusDeveloping owner poolStronger exact-model professional testing · checked 18 Sep 2026
VerdictA differentiated premium alternative for open-plan kitchens, combining the quietest rating here with flexible loading and auto-open drying—but supported by only a small, mixed owner pool.

The matte-black XD2A25MB is rated at 40dBA, a meaningful advantage when the dishwasher sits near a living or dining area. It is not literally silent, and real sound depends on installation and load, but 40dBA is an unusually quiet manufacturer rating for a freestanding model.

QuadWash uses multi-motion spray arms, while TrueSteam is designed to reduce water spots and improve treatment of stubborn residue. Auto Open Dry releases steam after the cycle. EasyRack Plus, a height-adjustable cutlery rack, wine-glass rack and tub lighting provide the loading flexibility expected at this price. The 15-place design uses 11.1 litres per cycle, with 5.5-star WELS, 4-star energy and a stated 246kWh per year.

AquaStop adds leak protection. ThinQ connectivity can provide cycle status and connected functions, but touch controls and apps also add complexity some owners will never use. The product warranty is two years, with separate additional motor-parts coverage under LG's wording—not a ten-year whole-product warranty. The premium is easiest to justify for buyers who care about low noise, the black finish and the combined drying and loading system.

40dBA ratingThe quietest stated noise level in this shortlist.

Auto Open DryAutomatic door opening helps release humid air after the cycle.

Limited/developing exact-model owner evidence, with stronger professional testing

The Good Guys · 5/5 from 3 reviewsA tiny positive exact-model owner sample that is useful but far too small to call strong customer evidence.
Appliances Online · about 3.5/5 from 4 reviewsA tiny mixed exact-model pool containing positive quietness and feature feedback, one odour complaint and one severe cleaning complaint.
Professional testing · stronger than the owner poolCHOICE has tested the exact XD2A25MB, while GadgetGuy's months-long exact-model review reported exceptionally quiet operation and strong cleaning. Locked CHOICE scores are not reproduced.

The professional evidence strengthens the hardware case, but it does not erase serious owner outliers or make the extremely small customer sample mature.

Pros

  • Very quiet 40dBA rating
  • Auto Open Dry and TrueSteam
  • Flexible EasyRack Plus layout
  • Strong efficiency for a 15-place model
  • Credible exact-model professional testing

Cons

  • Substantially more expensive than Beko
  • Small, mixed exact-model owner pool
  • Cleaning and odour complaints exist
  • Touch and connected features add complexity
  • Matte black will not suit every kitchen
Buy it ifYou have an open-plan kitchen and value low noise, auto-open drying, flexible loading and the matte-black finish enough to pay more.
Skip it ifYou want the deepest owner evidence, the lowest purchase price or simple physical controls without connected features.

What matters when buying a dishwasher

Freestanding is not built-under

Freestanding, built-under and fully integrated models are not interchangeable labels. Measure cavity width, height and depth, check hose and door clearance, confirm the kickboard arrangement and never assume the top can be removed.

Drying changes the daily experience

Condensation and heat-exchanger systems can leave plastics wetter than buyers expect. Auto-opening doors release humid air and can materially improve drying, but cabinetry clearance and the manufacturer's steam-path guidance still matter.

Rack layout beats headline capacity

Place-setting numbers are standardised shorthand, not a picture of your plates, bowls and cookware. Take note of tine spacing, folding supports, upper-rack adjustment and tall-glass clearance. A flexible 15-place machine may suit you better than a cramped 16-place design.

Cutlery tray or basket?

A third tray frees space in the lower basket and separates utensils well, but can reduce clearance above the middle rack. A removable basket is simpler and can be positioned around large cookware. Neither is universally better.

Noise matters in open-plan homes

Ratings around 40–44dBA are meaningfully quiet for a kitchen connected to living space. A few decibels can matter, but installation, floor and cabinetry affect perceived sound. No dishwasher with pumps, spraying water and drainage is literally silent.

Read warranties precisely

Separate the whole-product parts-and-labour warranty from long motor-parts, tub-rust or compressor cover. Those extensions can be useful, but they do not mean every component and service call is covered for ten years. Australian Consumer Law rights also apply.

WELS and energy ratings are useful when comparing machines of similar capacity, but tiny annual differences should not be exaggerated into dramatic lifetime savings. A dishwasher that loads well and cleans reliably is more valuable than chasing one specification in isolation.

Why isn't a Miele in the final three?

CHOICE named Miele its best dishwasher brand for 2026, ahead of Bosch, and that result deserves real weight. The current G 5210 SC Active Plus adds AutoOpen, QuickPowerWash, a 3D MultiFlex tray, 45dB operation, 4.5-star energy and 6-star water efficiency, but it also costs roughly $1,979 on promotion or $2,199 at normal direct pricing. Miele-hosted owner evidence is about 4.0–4.2/5 from roughly 33–41 reviews, while ProductReview's current evidence is materially weaker at about 2.7/5. Feedback includes reluctant power-button response, occasional AutoOpen behaviour and service or installation experiences. Miele remains a highly credible premium brand; this exact freestanding model did not create a clean enough product-level case to displace the Bosch, Beko or distinctly quieter LG.

Other serious contenders

ASKO offers premium construction and several current models with strong cleaning and quietness feedback, but independent Australian evidence on some current ranges—including DBI565-series complaints—is mixed. At current pricing it did not produce a stronger general recommendation than Bosch.

Fisher & Paykel has a large Australian range, but DishDrawer products use a meaningfully different architecture and should not be treated as interchangeable with conventional full-size freestanding machines. Its conventional candidates did not produce a cleaner evidence-and-value case than the finalists.

Samsung has weaker current Australian freestanding evidence than the selected models. The older DW60M6055FS/SA carries a low manufacturer-hosted owner score of about 2.9/5.

Which one should you buy?

For most households, choose the Bosch SMS6HCI02A at around $1,300. It is the most balanced combination of flexible loading, efficiency, low noise, current availability and mature exact-model evidence.

Choose the Beko BDFB1630X when value matters most. It gives you 16-place capacity and auto-open drying for much less, although its small independent range sample is significantly more negative than its large syndicated retailer pool.

Choose the LG XD2A25MB when a genuinely quiet open-plan kitchen, auto-open drying and premium loading features justify the extra spend—and you accept that exact-model owner evidence is still extremely limited.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bosch or Miele better for dishwashers in Australia?

CHOICE ranked Miele first and Bosch second in its 2026 brand analysis, so Miele has the stronger brand-level result. This guide recommends the Bosch SMS6HCI02A because its current price, exact-model evidence and overall product proposition made the cleaner model-level case. Brand rankings and exact-model recommendations answer different questions.

Is an auto-opening dishwasher door worth it?

It can be, especially if wet plastics frustrate you. Opening the door after the cycle releases humid air and usually improves drying without relying only on extra heat. Check the installation instructions, steam path and nearby cabinetry before buying.

How quiet should a dishwasher be for an open-plan kitchen?

Around 40–44dBA is a sensible target. The 40dBA LG is the quietest recommendation here on paper, while the 43dBA Beko and 44dBA Bosch are also appropriate for many open-plan homes. Correct levelling and installation still affect perceived noise.

Is a cutlery drawer better than a basket?

A drawer can free lower-rack space and keep utensils separated, but it may reduce clearance for tall items below. A basket is quicker to unload for some households and can be moved. Choose according to your plates, glasses and cookware rather than assuming one design wins.

How long should a dishwasher last?

There is no honest fixed lifespan. Build quality, water conditions, loading, maintenance, repairability, usage and service support all matter. Warranty length is useful context, but a long motor-only warranty does not guarantee the rest of the machine for that period.
