How we chose

We assessed current Australian exact models, legitimate street pricing, whole-room cleaning capability, stain and pet features, separate tank sizes, extraction and drying approach, upholstery tools, machine cleanup, replacement parts, warranty, storage, consumable costs, owner evidence and exact-model professional testing. Worth Buying Australia did not physically laboratory-test these carpet cleaners.

Serious contenders reassessed

Hoover PowerScrub XL FACCW21T0K is the strongest near-miss: its temporary $299 The Good Guys promotion made it a compelling step-up, but the offer was scheduled to end 30 September 2026 and its normal Hoover price was $399. BISSELL Revolution HydroSteam 3670F and the newer CleanView HydroSteam 4200F have strong capabilities, but the former has sharply conflicting exact-model evidence and the latter remains too new.

Vax VX97 and VX100 cost less but carry materially more mixed independent durability or support feedback. Britex and Rug Doctor hire machines remain sensible for infrequent annual cleaning or homes without storage; they are not direct permanent-purchase recommendations.

Australian exact-model owner evidence★★★★★ 5.0 / 5ProductReview: 4 reviews · The Good Guys: about 15 reviews · pools kept separate
VerdictThe strongest all-round home carpet cleaner for buyers who want whole-room capability without learning a fiddly trigger-controlled wash-and-dry routine.

The SmartWash's defining advantage is its automatic operation: push forward to apply solution and wash, then pull back to extract and dry. That makes its cleaning sequence easier to understand than machines that rely on the user judging trigger timing. HeatForce airflow and a separate Dry Only mode help remove moisture, although neither means carpet will be instantly dry.

The tank system keeps 3.8L of clean water, 2.1L of recovered dirty water and 450mL of solution separate. The smaller recovery tank may need emptying before the clean tank needs refilling. At around 9kg before water, this is also a substantial machine. The 9m cord and 2.4m hose give useful reach, while the pretreat wand, antimicrobial pet tool, SpinScrub tool and 2-in-1 upholstery/stair tool broaden it beyond floor-only cleaning.

Hoover PowerDash Compact Carpet Washer FACCW21R0K

Worth Buying score8.9 / 10Research-based editorial score
The Good Guys · exact model★★★★½ 4.6 / 5About 53 reviews · ProductReview evidence shown separately
VerdictThe strongest stable value choice for apartments, smaller homes and buyers who want a proper upright carpet washer without paying for large tanks or upholstery hardware.

The $299 PowerDash is compact enough to store more easily than the other finalists while retaining a full-width upright cleaning head and HeatForce-assisted drying. Owner feedback repeatedly highlights easy handling, accessible tanks and good cleaning for the price. Hoover's three-year warranty and currently listed replacement parts strengthen the ownership case.

The compromises are equally clear. Small tanks mean more trips to the sink during a full room, and the machine is better suited to small or medium carpeted areas than rapid whole-house cleaning. It also lacks the hose and upholstery-tool system supplied with the SmartWash and BISSELL. HeatForce assists drying but does not eliminate extraction passes, ventilation or waiting time.

ProductReview · exact FACCW21R0K · about 4.8/5 from nine reviewsA small but strongly positive independent sample. Repeated caveat: compact tanks require more refilling and emptying on full-room jobs.

Pros

  • Strong $299 complete-machine value
  • Compact and relatively easy to handle
  • Positive retailer and independent evidence
  • HeatForce-assisted drying
  • Three-year warranty and listed spare parts

Cons

  • Small tanks interrupt large jobs
  • No equivalent upholstery hose/tools
  • More manual control than SmartWash
  • Cleaning head still needs maintenance
  • Not designed as a commercial extractor

The Good Guys · exact model★★★★½ 4.7 / 5About 223 reviews · mixed ProductReview sample kept separate
VerdictThe specialist pick when pet stains, odours, upholstery and stairs matter enough to justify the higher price and a more involved cleanup routine.

The 3631F combines dual DirtLifter PowerBrushes with CleanShot pretreatment, Express Clean and deeper-cleaning modes. Its hose and upholstery tools make it more flexible than the PowerDash, while the large The Good Guys pool gives it substantially more retailer evidence than most carpet washers. This capability is why it holds the pet-home slot.

The evidence is not uniformly reassuring. ProductReview's much smaller exact-model sample is materially more mixed, with reports of belt, wheel, leak, motor and electrical failures plus difficulty obtaining local repairs. Those complaints do not erase the larger positive retailer pool, which can include incentivised verified reviews, but they do stop the BISSELL from taking the overall award. Pet hair can also collect around brush and nozzle areas, so the machine still needs careful cleaning after use.

ProductReview · exact 3631F · about 3.4/5 from nine reviewsA small but materially mixed independent sample, including belt, wheel, leak, electrical and after-sales complaints. This conflict remains visible rather than averaged away.

Pros

  • Excellent pet, stain and upholstery positioning
  • Dual DirtLifter brush system
  • CleanShot pretreatment
  • Express and deep-clean modes
  • Extensive positive retailer evidence

Cons

  • Costs $689
  • Mixed independent reliability evidence
  • After-sales complaints in exact-model feedback
  • More parts and brush areas to clean
  • Formula remains an ongoing consumable

What matters when buying a carpet cleaner

Vacuum before wet cleaning

A carpet washer is not a dry vacuum. Remove loose dirt and pet hair first so it does not turn into wet clumps around brush rolls, suction channels and nozzle covers. This is different from a wet and dry workshop vacuum, which can collect liquid spills but does not wash carpet with solution and extraction passes.

Extraction matters as much as solution delivery

More water does not automatically mean better cleaning. A machine must recover moisture effectively or drying takes longer and damp carpet becomes inconvenient. Apply solution as directed, then use slow extraction or dry passes until visibly less water returns to the tank.

Tank size changes the job

Compact tanks are lighter and easier to store but require more sink trips. Large tanks reduce interruptions while increasing ready-to-use weight. The SmartWash illustrates why both numbers matter: its 3.8L clean tank is paired with a much smaller 2.1L recovery tank.

Pet tools still need maintenance

Pet branding does not make a machine self-cleaning. Damp hair can wrap around brush rolls and build up behind clear nozzle covers. Check whether the head opens for maintenance and clean the machine according to its instructions after dirty or hair-heavy jobs.

Quick dry is conditional

HeatForce, Express Clean and similar modes can reduce drying time, but results depend on carpet thickness, humidity, airflow and how much solution was applied. Maximum marketing claims should not be treated as guaranteed Australian household drying times.

Check the carpet or rug first

Wet extraction may be unsuitable for some wool, loop-pile or Berber carpets and for silk, jute, viscose or other water-sensitive rugs. Check care instructions and colourfastness before cleaning. Use only the approved low-foaming solution—household detergent or dishwashing liquid can damage the machine or leave difficult residue.

Which one should you buy?

Choose the Hoover SmartWash Pet Complete FACCWSM21M for the best all-round mix of easy automatic operation, whole-room capacity and upholstery tools.

Choose the Hoover PowerDash FACCW21R0K when $299 value, compact storage and smaller-area cleaning matter more than tank size or attachments.

Choose the BISSELL 3631F when pets, frequent stains, stairs and upholstery justify its extra capability, cost and more conflicted independent evidence.

Frequently asked questions

Is buying a carpet cleaner worth it?

It can be if you clean several rooms more than once a year, have pets or children, or regularly refresh upholstery. For a once-a-year whole-house job, hiring a Britex or Rug Doctor can avoid purchase cost, storage and machine maintenance.

Should I vacuum before using a carpet cleaner?

Yes. Dry vacuuming removes grit and loose hair before they become wet debris around the washer's brushes and suction channels. A carpet washer is designed to apply and extract cleaning solution, not replace the initial dry-cleaning step.

How long does carpet take to dry?

It varies with carpet thickness, room humidity, ventilation and the number of wet and dry passes. HeatForce or Express Clean modes can help, but no domestic carpet cleaner should be assumed to leave every carpet instantly dry.

Are home carpet cleaners safe for wool rugs?

Not automatically. Some wool and loop-pile carpets and many silk, jute, viscose or speciality rugs can be damaged by wet extraction. Check the textile's care label and the cleaner manufacturer's instructions before using any solution.

Is a portable spot cleaner enough instead?

A spot cleaner is easier for isolated stains, stairs, sofas and car interiors. A full-size upright is faster and more consistent across complete rooms. Choose according to the area you actually expect to clean rather than assuming the larger machine is always more useful.
