Mesh vs a range extender
Mesh nodes cooperate under one network name and are designed to hand devices between access points as you move around the home. A range extender can be cheaper, but often creates less consistent roaming and may reduce performance. Mesh is most useful when a single well-positioned router cannot cover the home reliably.
Wi-Fi 6 vs Wi-Fi 6E vs Wi-Fi 7
Wi-Fi 6 and 6E
Wi-Fi 6 is enough for most households. Wi-Fi 6E adds a 6GHz band for compatible clients and backhaul, but 6GHz generally has shorter reach through walls than 5GHz.
Wi-Fi 7
Wi-Fi 7 adds features such as MLO and 320MHz channels. Only compatible phones, laptops and adapters benefit fully; changing the mesh does not upgrade older client hardware.
NBN speed, Ethernet ports and backhaul
A faster mesh improves coverage and local capacity; it cannot make an NBN plan exceed its service speed. Multi-gig Ethernet matters most for NBN 1000/2000-class services and fast NAS or PC transfers. A 1GbE port can become a bottleneck below the ceiling of newer 2.5GbE systems.
Ethernet backhaul is usually the most consistent way to connect nodes when cabling exists. Wireless backhaul is easier to install, but placement matters; tri-band systems can provide more capacity for node-to-node traffic than basic dual-band designs.
Australian NBN modem and VoIP compatibility
Most mesh systems are routers, not VDSL modems. FTTN and FTTB connections generally need a compatible VDSL modem or bridged ISP modem in front. FTTP and HFC services may permit a direct router connection depending on provider authentication and VLAN requirements. Households using an ISP-provided home phone may need to retain the ISP modem/router for VoIP.
Coverage claims and node placement
Manufacturer square-metre claims assume favourable conditions. Concrete, brick, metal, floors, interference and poor node spacing reduce coverage. Put the first node in the open near the internet connection, then place satellites where they still receive a strong link—not inside the dead zone. More nodes are not automatically faster and can add interference when placed too close together.
